yeule's astonishing new album 'Evangelic Girl is a Gun' is a dystopian dreamscape

yeule—the Singaporean-born, London-based artist also known as Nat Ćmiel—unveiled their fourth studio album, Evangelic Girl is a Gun, via Ninja Tune. This release marks a bold evolution in yeule's sonic journey, blending glitch-pop, trip-hop, and gothic industrial elements into a cohesive and emotionally charged experience.

Drawing inspiration from Polish painter Zdzisław Beksiński, yeule approaches this album as a painter would a canvas, capturing fleeting moments of emotion in sonic form. They describe the process as transcribing a moment in time with paint, reflecting both violent and gentle emotions.

Departing from their previous use of Auto-Tune, yeule opts for untreated vocals on this album to showcase a "raw, irreplaceable edge". The album features collaborations with notable producers such as A.G. Cook, Chris Greatti, Mura Masa, Clams Casino, Fitnesss, and Kin Leonn, each contributing to the album's rich and varied soundscape.

The album opens with 'Tequila Coma', setting a tone of introspection and emotional depth. Tracks like 'The Girl Who Sold Her Face' and 'Eko' delve into themes of identity and transformation, while '1967' and 'VV' offer a blend of nostalgic synths and modern beats. 'Dudu' and 'What3vr' continue the exploration of self and emotion, leading into 'Saiko' and the title track 'Evangelic Girl is a Gun', which encapsulate the album's core themes. The closing track, 'Skullcrusher' delivers a powerful finale with its intense energy and raw emotion.

Complementing the album's sonic elements are visually striking music videos, co-directed by yeule and Neil Krug. The video for 'Evangelic Girl is a Gun' presents a post-modern take on trip-hop and gothic industrial, featuring yeule navigating a dark, mythical world of their own creation . The 'Skullcrusher' video further amplifies the album's themes, showcasing yeule's commitment to blending visual art with music.

Recently, yeule also made their American TV debut on on John Mulaney's Everybody's Live.
